Fall Pervention Tips

Falls are one of the most common causes of injury, especially for older adults, but many falls can be prevented with a few simple precautions. Jackson County Fire District 4 encourages everyone to take a few minutes to identify and correct potential fall hazards around the home.
Keep walkways, stairs, and entryways clear of clutter, secure or remove loose rugs, and make sure commonly used areas have adequate lighting. Install handrails on stairways and grab bars in bathrooms where additional support may be helpful. Outdoors, watch for uneven surfaces, wet leaves, ice, loose gravel, and other seasonal hazards.
Wear supportive, properly fitting footwear and take your time when getting up, using stairs, or walking on uneven surfaces. Older adults should also consider discussing medications, vision, balance, or mobility concerns with their healthcare provider if they may be contributing to an increased risk of falling.
A few small changes can make a big difference. Take a look around your home today and help prevent a fall before it happens.
